Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas backed Lorenzo Córdova for an electoral council seat
In 2011, Mexico’s Congress approved Lorenzo Córdova for a seat on the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), the body that oversaw elections before it became the INE.
The IFE had been operating with six of its nine council members because Congress had not agreed on three replacements.
Congress set up a committee, including former presidential candidate Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, who backed Córdova as a suitable candidate.
The committee proposed Córdova alongside María Marván and Sergio García Ramírez, and Congress approved all three on December 15, 2011.
The appointment is drawing attention amid recent criticism of Córdova by President Claudia Sheinbaum, who alleged that he fostered corruption at the electoral institute.
Cárdenas’s death has also renewed attention to his role in the fight for electoral democracy in Mexico, following the disputed 1988 election; the account gives no further next step.
Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas approved Lorenzo Córdova as a suitable candidate for an electoral council seat, according to former PRD leader Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo.
Córdova was among three candidates proposed to fill vacant seats on Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute (IFE).
The committee that proposed the candidates included Cárdenas and three other prominent figures.
Congress approved the three appointments on December 15, 2011.
The IFE had been operating with six of its nine council members before the appointments.
