Vitoria family evicted after city rejects emergency housing request
A family with six children was evicted from a home in the Sansomendi area of Vitoria-Gasteiz, in Spain’s Basque Country.
The family had stayed after its landlord said in 2019 that he needed the home back, and the landlord pursued a legal case to recover it.
Reports put the family’s public benefits at about 2,450 euros a month, but a housing group disputes that figure as an estimate and says the family does receive assistance.
The benefits named include Spain’s minimum-income payment, a Basque income guarantee, housing support and child-related supplements; the exact amount from each is not known.
The city says the family declined temporary accommodation and has ruled out assigning it a home outside the usual process.
A city assessment also says the family spent 38 days in Morocco in summer 2026, leading to a 354.74-euro penalty on one benefit and interrupting its job and housing search.
The city says it may still consider urgent shelter if extreme need arises.
