Snowfarming brings Diavolezza ski season opening to October

Snowfarming brings Diavolezza ski season opening to October

Diavolezza ski resort in Switzerland opens to the public on October 24, one week later than planned.

Warm, sunny autumn weather limited snowmaking, so the slopes were not ready in their usual width and condition.

The resort stores snow from the previous winter to prepare pistes for an early start.

Since 2007, it has pushed snow onto a glacier in May and covered the piles with a protective fleece.

This method helps the resort open before most non-glacier ski areas, giving the public an early chance to ski and allowing national and youth teams to train.

Until November 15, the resort will be open to everyone on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays; teams use the slopes on other days.

After maintenance, the main season runs from December 19 to May 2, 2027.

The persistently high temperatures have so far allowed only very limited technical snowmaking, which is why the firn pistes could not yet be prepared for the public with their usual width and quality.

We have been successfully using snowfarming on the Diavolezza since 2007.
