Uruapan official detained in investigation into Carlos Manzo's killing

Michoacán state prosecutors detained Uruapan social welfare secretary Alejandra Vargas on suspicion of helping conceal crimes in the investigation into Mayor Carlos Manzo’s killing.

Manzo was shot dead in Uruapan, in the Mexican state of Michoacán, on November 1, 2025.

Vargas is the mother of a bodyguard who is also detained in connection with the case, and an aunt of two other detained suspects.

Prosecutors have not publicly explained what specific actions support the accusation against her, and she retains the right to be presumed innocent.

Authorities previously said 33 people had been detained in the case, which they described as 90% complete.

The investigation has included thousands of investigative and forensic actions and the review of about 1,200 hours of video.

Vargas has been placed before a judge, who will decide her legal status; Manzo’s widow is organizing a march for justice and peace ahead of the first anniversary of his killing.
