CBSE to let some Class X students use skill subjects to pass

From 2027-28, CBSE will let some Class X students use a passed skill subject to pass if they fail a core subject such as Maths, Science or Social Science.

The option applies only to students who chose one of 22 skill subjects in Class IX; it does not include Kaushal Vikas, which schools assess internally.

These subjects include areas such as AI, Data Science, Information Technology and Health Care, and vocational education is mandatory from Classes VI to X. The rule adds another route for students who have already had two attempts to pass the Class X board exams but still cannot clear one core subject.

Students who pass using skill-subject marks can still take an improvement exam in the failed subject.

Passing this way does not guarantee a place in any Class XI stream: schools decide admissions, and students need to pass Maths or Science to enter the science stream.
