Indonesia Expands Brebes Shallot Exports After Meeting Domestic Demand
Indonesia has started expanding shallot exports after domestic demand was met, with Food Affairs Coordinating Minister Zulkifli Hasan sending a shipment from Brebes to Thailand.
Brebes, in Central Java, is a major growing area that accounts for about 20% of Indonesia’s shallot production.
Brebes shallots already reach Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore.
The government says it will balance export growth with domestic supply and price stability so farmers can find buyers and earn better prices.
It also wants shallots grown by farmers to supply Indonesia’s free nutritious meals programme.
Next, the government plans to strengthen seeds and productivity, including reducing reliance on imported seeds to produce export-quality shallots.

What people are saying
We are grateful that domestic demand for shallots has been met. Now we are encouraging production to continue increasing so farmers have wider markets and better prices, including export markets.
Farmers should not produce a lot only to find that there is no market. That is why the government is present to ensure there is a market, both at home and abroad.
