Satellite analysis suggests North Korea may be building a 10,000-ton cruiser
Satellite imagery shows activity at North Korea’s Nampo shipyard that may be linked to a 10,000-ton cruiser.
The vessel would be larger than the country’s existing Choe Hyon-class destroyers, which weigh about 5,000 tons.
Analysts also observed construction work near Nampo that may be for a new base for large warships.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for more warships and modern naval facilities, including plans to build two surface combat ships a year over the next five years.
The shipyard work could help the navy operate, maintain and supply larger vessels, but the imagery does not confirm that a cruiser is under construction.
Work on an existing destroyer appears to be continuing beyond a deadline Kim set, and the reason for the delay is not known.
Analysts say larger ships could expand North Korea’s ability to operate farther offshore and add pressure to regional security; the construction is still underway.
Satellite analysis suggests North Korea may be building a 10,000-ton cruiser at the Nampo shipyard.
The analysis identified shipbuilding materials and extensive construction near Building A, along with about 120 temporary structures thought to be workers’ accommodation.
Construction is also under way on a possible new naval base and an expanded pier near the shipyard.
The report says the activity may support North Korea’s plans to expand its naval forces and operate larger warships.
The analysis also found signs that construction of a third Choe Hyon-class destroyer may be behind schedule.
