Andrey Poroshin appointed to lead Russia’s Lake Baikal conservation department

Andrey Poroshin has been appointed to lead Russia’s Lake Baikal conservation department in the country’s Natural Resources Ministry.

He will oversee work to protect Lake Baikal’s ecosystem and support sustainable social and economic development in the surrounding natural area.

Lake Baikal is the focus of a dedicated department within the ministry, which sets policy on water resources.

Poroshin joined the first group of the Time of Heroes program, a presidential initiative, in 2024 and completed its training in May 2026.

He had worked as an adviser to the natural resources minister since February 2025, and the minister was his mentor in the program.

His new role puts him in charge of conservation measures for the lake and its surrounding region.
