Allies say Flávio Bolsonaro is heading to the United States

Allies say Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro is heading to the United States after losing the presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

They say he decided to leave two days after the result, but his exact route and whereabouts are unclear.

A judge had ordered Bolsonaro to hand over his Brazilian and Italian passports, and police canceled his Brazilian document after he did not comply.

His Italian identity document remains valid, and police issued an alert to watch the borders.

Bolsonaro has not acknowledged his defeat, but he dropped plans to challenge the result over extended voting hours, which accounted for 0.03% of votes.

He is under criminal investigation in two cases involving alleged money laundering and other crimes, and is due to lose his special legal status when his Senate term ends in February.

The sources do not confirm where he is going or whether he will reach the United States.
