Magic: The Gathering’s Alchemy format set to retire in early 2027
Wizards of the Coast plans to retire Alchemy in early 2027 on its digital card game, MTG Arena.
Launched in 2021, Alchemy was designed for digital play, where cards could be changed through software updates.
Its mechanics included creating cards during a game and permanently changing card stats.
The format also let Wizards rebalance digital versions of cards without changing their printed versions.
Alchemy tested ideas that tabletop Magic could not easily use, though the format was polarizing among players.
Its cards will remain in other Arena formats, including Historic, Timeless and Brawl, after its dedicated queue ends.
