Hanwha wins $269 million contract to build US Navy landing ship

Hanwha Defense USA won a $269 million contract to build a medium landing ship for the US Navy and Marine Corps.

The South Korean Hanwha Aerospace subsidiary was chosen by US maritime services firm Tote Services through a competitive process.

The ship will be built at Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia, and the contract allows for three additional ships.

Medium landing ships carry Marine troops and equipment to shore and island areas.

The Navy and Marine Corps plan a 35-ship fleet, making the contract part of a much larger shipbuilding program.

It is Hanwha Defense USA’s first US Navy shipbuilding contract and supports Hanwha’s efforts to expand in the US shipbuilding industry.

Construction is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2027, and the program’s first ship is expected to be delivered in 2030.
