Ship reported on fire near Strait of Hormuz, crew status unknown

A ship was reported burning in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman's coast, after another vessel's captain saw it on Thursday.

The crew's condition and the cause of the fire are unknown, and there is no information on damage or environmental effects.

The British maritime agency UKMTO said the sighting was near Khasab, Oman, and urged ships in the area to be cautious and report suspicious activity.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said three tankers had recently caught fire after hitting sea mines on what it called an unauthorized route, but it is not known whether this ship was one of them.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global oil and gas supplies, and Iran has attacked ships it considers to be using the waterway without permission.

Ship attacks have risen during the US-Iran war, while oil exports through the strait fell again last week.

Authorities are investigating, and UKMTO has asked vessels to watch for suspicious activity.
