Judge seeks more evidence on alerts before mass entry into Ceuta

Judge María Tardón is seeking more evidence in an inquiry into the mass entry of migrants into Ceuta from Morocco on July 30.

She has asked security forces, government offices and the military for reports, communications, and footage from cameras, drones and border systems.

The inquiry is examining whether officials received warnings before the events and how information moved between institutions.

Witnesses have said that meetings in the days before addressed the seriousness of the situation and the need for urgent action.

Three Ceuta government officials and three police officers are due to testify, and the judge has also asked authorities to identify a local resident called Ahmed, who was said to have passed on advance information.

The estimated number of people who entered ranges from about 80,000 to nearly 90,000 in the accounts, and the judge is seeking confirmed figures on entries, returns, rescues and other effects.

She has also requested information on the impact on public services and the city’s economy.

The new evidence is intended to clarify what authorities knew and decided, and the inquiry will continue with the requested records and testimony.
