Tesla to Wind Down Cybertruck Production and Use Factory Space for Cybercabs
Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production in 2027 at its Texas factory, CEO Elon Musk said.
The electric pickup went on sale in late 2023, but sales have fallen short of the levels Tesla had hoped for.
Cox Automotive data cited in the story put third-quarter sales at 4,323 and sales for January through September at 11,586.
Tesla will use the factory space to build more Cybercabs, its robotaxi vehicles.
The company has stopped taking orders for the entry-level version and raised prices on the two remaining Cybertruck models.
The decision reflects weak demand for the pickup, and follows Ford ending production of its F-150 Lightning last year after low sales and rising costs.
Cybertruck production is expected to wind down next summer, while the company shifts more factory space to Cybercabs.
Elon Musk said Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas factory next year to make room for more Cybercabs.
The announcement did not clarify whether Tesla will stop making the truck entirely or move production elsewhere.
Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill appeared to suggest the vehicle was being discontinued.
The truck launched in 2023 and has had disappointing sales, with industry estimates putting deliveries at roughly 70,000.
