Police introduce no-cause checks in parts of Elmshorn
Police have made parts of Elmshorn city centre a control zone, allowing officers to check people without a specific reason.
The area includes streets around the lower Flamweg, Marktstraße and Wedenkamp in Elmshorn, in northern Germany.
Property crimes rose 140 percent, from 15 to 36, and violent crimes rose 82 percent, from 11 to 20, in the year ending September 30, 2026, compared with the previous year.
The police say crime in the area is higher than elsewhere in the city, and that more shops have been replaced by businesses such as bars and gaming halls.
Officers can check identities and search people and their belongings as they seek to reduce crime and improve residents’ sense of safety.
The control zone is due to last until February 1, 2027, with the police reviewing the measure regularly.
