Tesla opens €100 million European development centre in Berlin
Tesla has opened a European development centre in Berlin-Köpenick, near its car factory in Grünheide, Brandenburg.
Engineers and technicians will use its laboratories to work on vehicle design, motors and materials.
More than 250 staff will work there at first, including employees transferred from existing facilities in the Netherlands and other laboratory sites.
The centre will also test vehicle parts, including airbags, and battery cells.
Tesla says it invested €100 million in the site, a converted former factory.
The company has applied for approval to expand the centre to about 500 engineers and technicians, and says the building will be developed further in the coming months.
Tesla also plans to double annual production in Grünheide to one million cars, up from a planned 500,000 that the factory has not yet reached.
