Aena secures €306 million loan for Rio de Janeiro airport
Aena secured 1.8 billion reais in financing from Bradesco, Itaú and Brazil’s development bank.
The Spanish airport operator took over Rio-Galeão airport in October, and the loan will help cover the purchase cost.
Aena has already paid 1.555 billion reais, and says it will pay the remaining amount before the end of the year using its own funds and the new financing.
Outside companies plan about 162 million euros in investment over the next three years, including a hotel, a BYD research and testing centre, and logistics facilities.
Brazil’s government has asked Aena to add routes and flight frequencies at the airport.
Aena must pay 20% of gross revenue from the concession, which runs until 2039.
Aena secured financing of 1.8 billion Brazilian reais, equivalent to €306.3 million, to help pay for its acquisition of Rio-Galeão airport.
Bradesco, Itaú and Brazil’s BNDES provided the financing.
Aena began managing the airport on October 7 and said it would use the new financing and its own funds to complete the payments.
The airport is now called Aeroporto Internacional do Rio, or AIR.
Aena has also presented a plan for third-party companies to invest about 1 billion reais in projects at the airport over the next three years.
