India sets 2027 census schedule, with caste among 40 questions

India has set the main population count for January and February 2027, with people able to fill in their details online from January 10 to 24.

The count will cover most states and union territories, while Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand have separate schedules ahead of assembly elections.

Manipur is excluded for now after the exercise there was put on hold; Ladakh and some snow-bound areas follow a different calendar, with enumeration already completed in some of them.

Census workers will ask 40 questions about individuals and households, including details such as family, migration and access to services.

The census will include caste enumeration for all communities, the first such exercise since 1931, according to the coverage.

The count’s reference point is midnight on March 1, 2027, and a revisional round is scheduled for March 1 to 5.
