Austin’s F1 race sets an attendance record as growth strains access

The United States Grand Prix at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas drew 467,000 fans across the race weekend, a record for the event.

The Texas circuit is popular with drivers and fans, and is seen by some as a model for modern Formula 1 tracks.

But traffic on the roads to the venue limits how many people can attend; the circuit stopped selling tickets rather than risk waits of three to five hours.

Circuit boss Bobby Epstein said the access roads are scheduled for major expansion within two years, which could allow weekend attendance to pass 500,000.

A new luxury clubhouse above Turn 1, with pools and corporate hospitality, has drawn criticism from fans who see it as a sign of F1’s growing focus on wealthy guests.

The circuit also has bumps that have caused discomfort for drivers, showing the tension between its appeal and the challenges of hosting a growing event.
