Mexican lawmaker reports knife attack and seeks protection

Cassandra de los Santos says she was attacked with a knife in Río Bravo, a city in Mexico's Tamaulipas state.

She is a federal lawmaker for the Green Party and says several people intercepted her as she was heading to her bus after meeting friends and colleagues.

One attacker cut her abdomen, leaving a wound about 15 centimetres long, and she was hospitalized.

De los Santos says she filed a complaint, and prosecutors in Río Bravo are investigating.

A week after the attack, she asked the federal government, the National Guard and the federal prosecutor's office for protection.

She said she had faced dangerous situations since March and had previously requested help from the National Guard, but had received no response.

The investigation is ongoing, and the story highlights her concerns about safety for public officials during an election period.

We filed the complaint; the prosecutor’s office is currently in Río Bravo carrying out the relevant investigations.

Since March, both in Mexico City and here, very strange things began to happen, so I requested support from the National Guard by submitting a letter in the Chamber of Deputies, and to this day it has not been resolved or answered.

At first I was afraid to report it; if we officials have that fear, how many colleagues have been killed while prosecutors’ offices are still investigating?
