Ulaş Akhan appointed to run Esenyurt municipality

Ulaş Akhan has been appointed to run Esenyurt municipality in Istanbul, replacing Can Aksoy.

Aksoy was removed from the role and will continue working as a deputy governor.

The appointment follows the arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer, after which Aksoy had been assigned to oversee the municipality.

Akhan was most recently secretary-general of Van Metropolitan Municipality, a post he took up in March 2025.

He has held several senior public administration roles, including district governor posts and a deputy governor role in Kilis.

Akhan now takes over the municipality's administration, but no further steps or timetable were given.
