Startup reports 29 bone marrow transplants using tissue from deceased donors
Ossium Health has supplied marrow for 29 transplants using tissue taken from deceased donors.
The San Francisco startup removes marrow from spinal bones and stores it at very low temperatures.
Its method offers an option for patients who cannot find a compatible living donor; Ossium says at least 70% of people needing a transplant do not find a compatible relative in time.
A 48-year-old woman with aggressive leukemia received the stored marrow after no match was found among her family or existing donor registers.
All 29 procedures were successful, the company says, and took place in clinical trials or compassionate-use programs.
The bank aims to provide marrow within 72 hours, rather than leave patients waiting for a donor search.
Ossium projects more than 60 transplants by 2027, according to its chief executive.

Many people told us that what we were doing was crazy, especially doctors.
They had never considered obtaining bone marrow from a deceased donor and assumed it would not be as good or would not work.
