Mexico bars passengers in pickup cargo beds on federal roads

Mexico’s federal traffic rules ban carrying passengers in pickup beds on federal roads.

The ban covers highways, national roads and bridges under federal control, as well as other cargo spaces without proper seats and seat belts.

The rule is in Article 70 of the federal traffic regulations and applies even when local rules tolerate the practice on rural roads.

Federal Highway Guard officers can issue fines of 20 to 25 UMAs, about 2,346 to 2,932 pesos.

The amount depends on the circumstances, including repeat violations and the risk to passengers.

Authorities may also stop the vehicle from continuing if the passengers cannot be moved to authorised transport.

Cargo beds lack seat belts and protective structures, so passengers can be thrown out or seriously injured in a crash.
