Sedgefield fined £6,500 after injured jockey taken to hospital in horsebox

A British Horseracing Authority panel fined Sedgefield Racecourse £6,500 over several failures to follow racing rules.

The County Durham course was investigated after a jockey fell in March and injured his left collarbone and shoulder.

A doctor initially cleared him to ride again, but later advised him to go to A&E when his pain increased.

All ambulance staff had left by then, and the jockey was too uncomfortable to get into a car, so he went to hospital in a horsebox with medical staff following.

The panel also found poor medical facilities and a broken phone line at the course, as well as a lack of communication about the injured jockey.

This was Sedgefield’s fourth breach of the relevant rule since 2022, though the panel noted the course had accepted responsibility and made progress.

A follow-up inspection found significant improvement in April, but the fine reflects the seriousness and number of the failings.

The multiplicity of breaches and the seriousness of the Jockey A incident present further aggravating features. In terms of mitigation, the team at the racecourse have acknowledged errors and shortcomings. Action has been taken with cooperation from the authority and a further inspection on April 10 revealed significant progress.
