Bayern coach Vincent Kompany taken to hospital after collapsing

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was taken to a Munich hospital by ambulance after collapsing following training on Friday.

The 40-year-old Belgian had been battling a viral infection for several days and had missed some training and media duties.

He returned to the touchline for Bayern's 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal despite saying the illness had left him exhausted.

Reports said a rescue helicopter landed at Bayern's training ground, but accounts differed on whether it was used to take him to hospital.

One report said his condition was stable after the collapse.

The incident matters because Kompany had recently been trying to work through the illness while leading Bayern.

His assistant Aaron Danks had said Kompany should rest and take the time he needs; no further update on his recovery was given.

I have worked a lot and slept little. At some point my body said it needed a bit of rest. The preparation for this game was still very good.

As a coach, you always want to do everything and get everything done. I got a pretty nasty virus last week, then of course I didn’t listen to my body, and at some point my body said: Now stop!

The most important thing we are encouraging him to do right now is rest and take the time he needs – however long that may take.
