France to release strategic diesel stocks to ease pump prices

France has approved the sale of strategic diesel reserves in a bid to ease high fuel prices.

The decree allows up to 1.6 million cubic metres of diesel to be sold through January 31, with the allocation and price for distributors to be set by a separate order.

The government expects the move to cut diesel prices by 12 to 18 cents per litre; diesel has averaged between €2.30 and €2.40 a litre since early October.

Distributors must pass the full reduction to consumers and tell them about it before a sale, with the change allowed to take effect from November 1.

They must send sales and price information to authorities for checks.

Separately, aid for farmers buying agricultural diesel continues until December at 15 cents per litre, and a separate decree is expected to reopen earlier applications for some farmers.
