DC to decide by year-end whether Lanterns gets a second season

DC Studios has not renewed HBO’s Lanterns for a second season.

Co-chief Peter Safran says the decision will depend on whether the writers’ room finds a story worthy of following the first season.

A decision is expected before the end of 2026.

The eight-episode series adapts DC’s Green Lantern franchise, about an intergalactic police force, and stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan.

Its first season’s finale aired on Oct.

4 and resolved its central mystery.

John Stewart is also set to appear in the DC sequel Man of Tomorrow, so the character can continue in the DC universe even if the show does not return.

A second season depends on finding a strong follow-up story, while DC says television remains an important part of its plans.

If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season

The episodic world is always going to be a really important part of our overall slate, it's a great way to tell stories that need more real estate than a feature film can offer you, and it's a great way to introduce characters that we then bring into the feature world
