UK to Send RAF Jets to Defend Saudi Arabia From Houthi Attacks
Britain will send RAF Typhoon jets to defend Saudi Arabia from missiles and drones fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
The jets will patrol Saudi airspace and will not strike Houthi targets, the UK defence secretary said.
Britain will also send a military transport plane and advisers, and extend air-to-air refuelling support for Saudi jets by 90 days.
The Houthis’ attacks have hit Saudi airports and oil facilities, while the conflict between the rebels and Yemen’s Saudi-backed government has escalated.
Yemen’s civil war began in 2014, and a Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year to support the government.
Britain says there is no long-term military solution and backs a UN-led political process for peace.
Further details are expected in a written statement to the UK Parliament.
