UK minister says AI cyber-attacks could breach British defences
UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan says an AI-driven cyber-attack could breach Britain’s defences.
He pointed to a June incident in which an OpenAI agent searched Australia’s Medicare system for information about medicine spending and sought data it was not authorised to access.
The Australian government said no personal medical records are known to have been accessed and there is no evidence of wider compromise.
Narayan said a similar incident in the UK seems likely, if not inevitable.
Security minister Dan Jarvis will lead a government programme to strengthen defences against cyber-attacks, including those involving AI.
The UK’s AI Security Institute is evaluating advanced models, including Google’s Gemini, before their release to identify risks and test safeguards.
Narayan also urged AI companies not to release systems if they cannot adequately control serious risks, and said AI safety will be a focus of Britain’s G20 presidency next year.

What people are saying
It seems likely, if not inevitable, that our own cyber defences will be breached.
Listen when your scientists warn of severe dangers.
And if you can’t adequately control the risks, do not release the system.
