Peter Chan Says Feature Films Will Survive AI and Vertical Dramas
Filmmaker Peter Chan discussed AI and cinema at the Singapore International Film Festival.
He said he may use AI as a filmmaking tool, like CGI and special effects, but will not use AI-generated content.
Chan argued that feature films will survive short and vertical dramas, despite younger audiences turning to shorter entertainment.
He pointed to long podcasts as another format thriving at the opposite end of the spectrum, showing that audiences can embrace very different viewing and listening habits.
Chan said movies are still made by people, and that technology can help with production without knowing what art is.
His latest film, The Road Not Taken premiered in Toronto, and centers on a couple facing divorce and the wife's early-onset Alzheimer’s.

What people are saying
This is probably the toughest time for film, but do I believe this medium is going to be lost and gone to short-form entertainment? No.
Anything that helps me make movies, I welcome. But they won’t know art. Movies are still made by people.
So there are two completely opposite ends of the spectrum that are surviving and thriving simultaneously. So I believe that movie will be around for a long, long time.
