Two pedestrians killed by car on sidewalk in Ariège
A car struck and killed two pedestrians on a sidewalk in Lavelanet, in France’s Ariège region, on October 20.
The victims were a man and a woman, both about 70, and the crash happened on Avenue Léon-Blum.
The driver says he remembers nothing about the crash and has epilepsy; prosecutors say he had taken his medication.
Initial alcohol and drug tests were negative, but blood test results are still pending.
The driver was charged with road homicide and placed under judicial supervision, despite prosecutors asking for a different decision.
He had previously been known to justice services for road offences, including driving under the influence of drugs.
The prosecutor plans to appeal, while investigators work to establish how the crash happened and an expert assesses the car’s speed.
