Fukuoka assembly approves powerful inquiry into money allegations

Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly approved a special inquiry committee on October 17 to examine allegations involving payments and other issues.

The committee will investigate claims of money changing hands over the assembly’s speaker and vice-speaker positions, as well as overseas trips described as costly and unclear.

The allegations came to light in July, when a former assembly speaker said a senior member of the Liberal Democratic Party’s prefectural group had demanded a large sum before the speaker took office.

The inquiry will run alongside an independent panel already set up to examine the issues.

Its 15 members can require people to appear, give evidence and provide records, powers backed by possible penalties for unjustified refusal.

The committee has a budget limit of 5 million yen and is due to work until February 2027.

Its findings could clarify what happened, while the assembly has also debated how to protect private information during the inquiry.
