Clean-up drive removes more than 1,050 kg of waste from Cauvery banks
Around 70 volunteers collected more than 1,050 kg of waste from the Cauvery riverbanks between Mekedatu and Sangama in Karnataka.
The clean-up took place at Sangama, where the Cauvery and Arkavathi rivers meet, in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.
The drive was organised by three groups, including the Karnataka Forest Department, as part of National Wildlife Week and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
Sangama is a popular destination for tourists and families, and volunteers said the amount of waste showed the scale of water pollution.
Participants discussed plastic waste and ways to reduce single-use plastics and prevent waste at its source.
The organisers did not announce further action, but participants discussed ways to reduce waste.
