Five Italian opposition parties agree on a shared budget resolution

Five Italian opposition parties agreed on a shared resolution on the government’s public finance plan.

The agreement covers 21 economic and social policy points and could provide a starting point for a common election programme.

It was not put to a vote, because the governing majority’s resolution had already been approved.

The five parties called on the government to avoid further increases in military spending and reconsider its NATO commitments.

Their other proposals include measures on wages, healthcare, housing, education and climate.

The agreement is a step toward a shared platform, but the parties remain divided over military aid to Ukraine.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is due to address parliament on Wednesday ahead of a European Council meeting, and the parties may take different positions on Ukraine.
