Android will use Gemini to warn users about scam messages

Google has announced new scam and privacy protections for Android users.

An optional setting in Google Messages will use Gemini to assess a message sender’s intent and warn users if a message may be a scam.

Google says the message analysis takes place in an encrypted, secure space that even Google cannot access.

Gemini Nano will also check links on certain devices, including Pixel 10 and newer and select Samsung phones, before users tap them.

The Messages setting is rolling out in the coming weeks, while other planned protections include hiding sensitive information during screen sharing and blocking apps from secretly enabling call forwarding.

Google also plans to expand scam warnings in message notifications to more devices, and says Android has blocked over three million fake calls in a bank-verification feature launched in Brazil.
