Rufián and Montero call for a left-wing alliance to pressure Spain’s PSOE
ERC’s Gabriel Rufián and Podemos’s Irene Montero campaigned together in Barcelona ahead of Spain’s coming general election.
They said the left should work together to pressure the PSOE, the governing party, rather than simply join it.
They want a government to make lowering rents its first priority and to ban property speculation.
Montero also called for taking homes from investment funds, raising the minimum wage and shortening the working week.
Both criticised the Frente Amplio, an alliance that includes Comuns, Más Madrid, Sumar and Izquierda Unida, arguing it would not solve problems on its own.
Rufián said pressure from left-wing and regional parties could push the PSOE to pass measures for ordinary people.
The election is about five weeks away, and the proposed measures would depend on the parties having enough support to form a government.
Gabriel Rufián and Irene Montero called for a left-wing alliance to pressure Spain’s Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) after the next general election.
They spoke at a campaign rally in Nou Barris, Barcelona, under the slogan “Home, life, future”.
They said a government supported by their alliance should make lowering rents a priority and curb housing speculation.
They also criticised the Frente Amplio, saying it would not solve problems by itself because it was too similar to the PSOE.
Rufián and Montero are candidates for Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) and Podemos, respectively.
