Italian winter gas bills could average €860 for variable-rate households

Codacons estimates an average winter gas bill of about €860 for Italian households with variable-rate contracts, compared with about €630 for fixed-rate contracts.

The estimates cover households in Italy as they prepare to use home heating during winter.

Rising energy prices linked to the war in the Middle East are adding to expected costs.

Bills vary by region because of differences in climate, housing and gas use.

Variable-rate bills could be about €205 higher than in the previous winter period, from December 2025 to March 2026.

The biggest increases are estimated in Valle d’Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige and Lombardy, while Sicily and Calabria would see smaller increases.

Further market price rises could push bills higher, especially for households on variable rates and vulnerable users.
