Canadian cybersecurity executive arrested on federal extortion charges

Canadian cybersecurity executive Edward Dubrovsky, 54, was arrested in Pennsylvania on federal extortion-related charges.

Court records say the charges involve conspiring to threaten information to extort money and interfering with commerce through threats.

The case has been moved to the Eastern District of Texas, and Dubrovsky remains in custody while further proceedings are arranged.

The FBI is investigating ShinyHunters, a group linked to a breach of the bureau’s jobs website that exposed personal information about employees.

FBI Director Kash Patel said agents had arrested another suspected ShinyHunters co-conspirator, but did not name the person.

Authorities have not confirmed whether Dubrovsky is that suspect or whether his charges relate to the FBI breach.

The complaint against him is sealed, so the conduct alleged in the case is not publicly clear.
