Police and Students Negotiate Rally Location in Central Jakarta

Police and student protesters negotiated the rally location in central Jakarta on Wednesday, 28 October.

The demonstration involved BEM UI and other student groups, with police proposing a site in front of the UOB building at Dukuh Atas instead of Bundaran HI.

Students still wanted to rally at Bundaran HI, so talks had not yet settled the location.

The protest was part of an action by the SADAR alliance, which said it was continuing a demonstration held on 20 October.

The groups called for action on forest fires, public spending, education costs, civil liberties and human rights, among other issues.

Police said they would use a dialogue-based approach, while officers managed traffic and monitored the situation; the road from the UOB building toward Bundaran HI was closed.

Police continued talks and monitored for changes, including a possible increase in protesters or movement toward Bundaran HI.
