Anuj Thakur’s death draws attention to seizures during sleep

Television actor Anuj Thakur died at 33, reportedly after having a seizure while asleep on October 27.

The exact medical circumstances have not been independently established, and his death was reported by a friend after speaking with Thakur’s family.

A seizure during sleep, also called a nocturnal seizure, happens when the brain’s electrical activity is suddenly disrupted.

It can be hard to spot, because a person may be asleep and may not remember the episode; signs can include jerking, stiff muscles, irregular breathing or confusion afterwards.

A seizure lasting over five minutes, or repeated seizures without recovery, is a medical emergency and needs immediate attention.

Rarely, seizures can affect breathing and heart rhythm, and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy is particularly associated with uncontrolled generalised tonic-clonic seizures, including those during sleep.
