Daegu food exports rise 30.2% as demand for Korean food grows

Daegu, a city in South Korea, exported $65.77 million in food products, up 30.2% from the same period a year earlier by the end of last month.

The increase came amid growing international interest in Korean food.

Drinks were the largest food export category, followed by processed agricultural and seafood products.

Rice cakes, including tteokbokki, made up 88.1% of processed agricultural and seafood exports, worth $14.73 million.

The United States and China were the biggest markets, while exports to Indonesia rose 833.5% to $2.89 million.

Daegu businesses shipped food to 75 countries, suggesting their markets are spreading beyond the largest destinations.

Customs officials say they are helping food companies with tailored advice on tariffs, product classification and rules of origin.
