Fire at Cattenom nuclear plant transformer quickly brought under control

A fire broke out at the Cattenom nuclear plant in northeastern France on Tuesday afternoon.

It started on a transformer serving unit 3, which was shut down for maintenance.

The transformer was outside the plant’s controlled area, and work was under way to restore its power supply.

Automatic fire systems contained the blaze, and firefighters later confirmed it was out.

EDF said the fire had no effect on plant safety, staff or the environment, and no one was injured.

Authorities were informed, and the cause remains unknown.
