Rental listings in Spain fall 19% after new housing decrees

Rental listings on property websites in Spain fell 19% in one month after new housing decrees took effect.

The measures include a forced two-year extension of rental contracts and automatic, indefinite renewals of existing contracts.

They followed public anger over the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, who died in hospital two weeks after leaving her home.

Some small landlords say the rules leave them feeling unprotected, and some have halted plans to rent out their properties.

Marta and her two sisters in Madrid say they have spent years trying to regain a home rented informally by their father, despite court rulings in their favour.

They fear the new rules could delay recovery until 2028 or 2030 and say they plan to sell the property once they get it back.

Congress is due to decide on the decrees on November 12, with Spain's election called for November 29.
