ArtCraft’s FilmCraft video editor recreates Adobe Premiere’s interface

US company ArtCraft has released FilmCraft, an open-source video editor modeled on Adobe’s Premiere.

ArtCraft says its software uses AI to study how existing programs work and then rebuilds them, rather than reusing their source code.

FilmCraft’s interface closely resembles Premiere’s, with source clips, a timeline and separate monitors for source and edited video.

The test used version 0.5 on macOS, and found that some menus were in Japanese and Japanese file names displayed correctly.

The software is one of several ArtCraft tools modeled on popular products, including programs from Adobe and Microsoft.

Creative software is often sold in subscriptions that bundle multiple tools, which can be costly for people who only need one feature occasionally.

FilmCraft offers an open-source alternative to try, but the account does not say what its future development or legal status will be.
