French esports commentator charged with rape amid wider concerns over sexual violence

Corentin M., a 28-year-old French streamer and commentator for League of Legends competitions known online as Chreak, was charged with rape in July.

Two women had publicly accused him at the end of June, and his employer suspended him.

He is under conditional release, and his lawyer says he denies the allegations; he remains innocent unless proven guilty.

The case comes amid wider concerns about sexual and gender-based violence in competitive gaming, a sector described as young and dominated by men.

Around 20 women working in French esports told Le Monde about alleged physical and psychological pressure, sexual assault, revenge porn, harassment and sexist online abuse.

Many spoke anonymously because they feared professional retaliation.

They said the industry has not yet had a meaningful, sector-wide reckoning with these issues.
