Indonesia Projects Surpluses in Eight Food Commodities for 2026
Indonesia's government says 2026 forecasts show surpluses in eight food commodities, including rice, maize, sugar, chicken, eggs, shallots and chillies.
The National Food Agency projects production of these goods at 72.91 million tonnes, against domestic needs of 68.22 million tonnes, for a combined surplus of about 4.69 million tonnes.
These figures are projections, and the government presents them as evidence of progress in strengthening food security.
State-owned BULOG has also bought a record amount of rice for government reserves under its public service obligation.
By October 11, procurement reached about 4.13 million tonnes, or 103.29% of its 4-million-tonne target, and government rice stocks stood at more than 4.6 million tonnes.
The larger reserves give the government more room to manage supplies and prices and to provide market support or food aid if needed.
Indonesia projects that production of eight food commodities will exceed domestic needs in 2026.
The eight commodities are rice, maize, consumer sugar, broiler chicken meat, chicken eggs, shallots, large red chillies and bird’s eye chillies.
Combined production is projected at 72.91 million tonnes, against national needs of 68.22 million tonnes, for a surplus of about 4.69 million tonnes.
Food Coordinating Minister Zulkifli Hasan said the country had achieved self-sufficiency in the eight commodities.
By 11 October 2026, the state logistics agency Bulog had procured 4,131,492 tonnes of rice, exceeding its 4-million-tonne target.
