Spain approves €225 million for affordable and university housing
Spain’s Cabinet approved €225 million for two housing programs on Tuesday.
One program gives €180 million to five regions with officially designated rent-stressed areas, covering 317 municipalities.
Catalonia will receive the largest share, with €119.4 million for its 271 municipalities in those areas.
The regions can use the funds to build or renovate homes, buy land or existing homes, and support affordable or social renting.
The other program provides €45 million for about 2,000 university accommodation places through projects involving seven universities and the city of Lleida.
The plan addresses housing difficulties faced by students and university staff who need to live away from home for study or work.
The accounts differ on whether the decrees require parliamentary approval, so the next step is not clear.
Spain’s Council of Ministers approved €225 million for affordable housing on 20 October 2026.
The package includes €180 million for five autonomous communities with rent-pressure zones.
A further €45 million will fund affordable university accommodation for students and university staff.
The housing funds cover 317 municipalities, where more than 9 million people live.
The university projects are expected to create about 2,000 accommodation places in a first phase.
