SEBI allows eligible overseas investors to complete KYC digitally
India's securities regulator SEBI has eased KYC rules for non-resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India and foreign nationals.
Eligible investors in FATF-compliant countries can complete onboarding digitally from abroad, without being physically present in India.
KYC is the identity and background checking needed before people can use financial services, including investing in India's securities markets.
The change removes a rule that had blocked remote onboarding and accepts overseas addresses as proof of address.
Investors can also have PAN details checked through the tax database, while video verification is allowed when an in-person check is not feasible.
KYC records can be reused across financial intermediaries, but the intermediary handling a new client remains responsible for checking them and carrying out due diligence.
The revised rules take effect on December 3, 2026, and do not cover individual investors living in FATF non-compliant countries; foreign nationals seeking FPI registration remain under separate rules.
