River can climb standings with win over Racing
River Plate faces Racing on Sunday at the Monumental Stadium, with a win able to lift River past Sarmiento in the Clausura group standings.
Sarmiento lost to Gimnasia, leaving it one point ahead of River, and River could reach the top four if it wins and Belgrano does not beat Aldosivi.
The Clausura playoffs and qualification for the 2027 cups are both at stake in the late-season standings, including the annual table.
Later, Central plays Huracán; a Huracán win would increase pressure on River to beat Racing, while a Central win would widen its lead in the group.
Gimnasia’s victory helped River in the group but strengthened Gimnasia in the race for a Libertadores place.
If Boca loses to Independiente and River beats Racing, River could move within two points of Boca in the annual table.
River’s next Superclásico against Boca is at the Bombonera, and six points will still be available in the annual table before that meeting; beating Racing would improve River’s position but would not guarantee playoff or cup qualification.
River can move above Sarmiento in its group standings by beating Racing on Sunday.
The match will be played at the Monumental, and a win could put River in the group’s top four if Belgrano does not beat Aldosivi first.
River’s playoff position also depends on the result of Central’s match against Huracán later that day.
A win over Racing would also help River in the annual standings and could bring it closer to Boca before the Superclásico.
A victory would not guarantee River a playoff place or qualification for the 2027 Copa competitions.
