Foreign investors sell Taiwan stocks at a record pace despite a 62% rise

Foreign investors are selling Taiwan shares at a record pace despite a 62% rise in the Taiwan stock index this year.

The selling involves a market heavily shaped by chipmaker TSMC, which makes up more than 40% of the benchmark index.

TSMC has benefited from global demand for AI chips and reported record quarterly sales, up 41% from a year earlier.

Foreign investors sold about 302.6 billion Taiwan dollars net in one day, the largest amount since records began in 2004.

Their net sales so far this year total 1.92 trillion Taiwan dollars, more than three times last year's full-year figure.

The selling points to doubts about further growth and the staying power of AI investment, even as TSMC's results remain strong.

Analysts say foreign investment flows have often moved ahead of TSMC's sales growth, so the current divergence is a concern for Taiwan's market.
